What I’m Reading and Re-Reading

“Daring Greatly” by Brené Brown, Ph.D.,LMSW
This is the basis for The Daring Way and Dr. Brown’s latest book based on her research of vulnerability and shame. “Daring Greatly” was listed by Amazon in the list of top 100 books a person should read in his lifetime. I continue to reference this book in my work and find it continues to be invaluable personally and professionally.

“Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor. E. Frankl
Originally published in 1959, this powerful book continues to rivet readers with Frankl’s theory of logotherapy, a conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure but the pursuit of what we find meaningful. He uses his descriptions of life in Nazi death camp and lessons of spiritual survival to illustrate that we cannot avoid suffering but can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward.

“Overworked and Overwhelmed (the mindfulness alternative)” by Scott Eblin
This is Scott’s second book and looks at how to stay present so you can achieve your higher purpose. It includes his Life GPS assessment tool, physical routines that make the reader more mindful, mental routines that reduce clutter and increase focus, relational routines that connect you with the bigger picture, and spiritual routines that build perspective.

“In the Light of Day, A Celebration of Life’s Journey” by Michael Williams
This is a short book of 37 poems that the author wrote to his boys as they were growing up. Sweet, honest and lovely poems, they are appropriate not only as messages to growing children, but I routinely read aloud some of these poems to my Daring Way™ groups as we discuss challenges, shame, vulnerability, and courage.

“The Energy Bus” by Jon Gordon
This is a quick read that helps illustrate how to build a positive team and culture in order to overcome negativity. Purpose, vision, enthusiasm, and spirit are all woven together to create an entertaining read that fills you with positive energy.

Client Feedback for Frances Davis Baldwin

Daring Way™ Workshops

“The three day intensive was a small group (6) and the concentrated time allowed us to bond quickly and form meaningful relationships quickly. This allowed everyone to feel safe in being vulnerable. I think because we were all comfortable sharing with each other so quickly, we really experienced the full effect of The Daring Way™ message. “

“I felt like I got a great deal out of the time spent and still, a week later, feel empowered and strong from the messages I received.”

“It was a very moving and encouraging experience. Like a breath of fresh air.”

“The group discussion and sharing was enlightening and convicting to me. Handouts and questions given out were very helpful and wonderfully thought provoking. Loved the video tying all together.”

“I recommend The Daring Way™ to my friends because dealing with shame, resilience, unworthiness is something each person deals with in some way.”

“The safe, positive, accepting environment Frances created, sustained, and continually took the pulse of, throughout the 8 weeks was most meaningful.   Everything was meaningful, the video clips, flip charts, booklet and handouts, weekly emails, Frances’ empathetic responses to shared stories, and her personal exuberance for this journey. All are integral parts of Daring Way™ experience.”

“Make sure this is accessible to men and all types of people and walks of life. If anyone needs it, it is men.”

“The honest and courageous sharing from everyone in our group was most meaningful.”

“Cultivating my purpose, who’s in my arena and how I deal with those aspects of the arena, learning from others in my group….all were very meaningful”

“Most meaningful were the group discussions, Brené Brown videos, and the crafts.”

“Awesome presenter! Open, kind, humorous, knowledgeable, interpersonal! Thank you so much, Frances. This training has changed my life.”

“Most meaningful were: understanding vulnerability, having an anthem, and sharing insights with the group. I appreciated all of it.”

Leadership Coaching

“Frances’ coaching was extremely effective in helping me gain a sense of perspective about the environment, my staff, the roles that I have chosen to play, and why. Having that sense of perspective allowed me to think more clearly about what WAS working and what WASN’T working and why, and helped me define my goals and objectives. Frances did a great job of helping me clarify what drives me and what challenges me; she also helped me to see the strengths and the areas for improvement in my leadership style. She is a terrific listener – she is analytically sharp but at the same time quite empathic- and a great synthesizer. She clearly valued me as a person. What I gained from this experience was a better appreciation for my strengths, a clearer appreciation of what drives me (and what drives me crazy), and some very important understanding about how to be consistently effective, how to consistently contribute, without burning out.”

“The outcome of our coaching sessions far exceeded my expectations. Frances is an incredible listener. She focused on what I was telling her. She provided literature for me to review that identified ways to solve some of my problems, she encouraged me to keep a journal, she helped me identify ways not to run on empty, she helped me establish accountability for my actions. I became proactive in working with my leadership and peers to work around their weak areas, rather than focus on their weak areas. Her focus was always on me and helping me to become a more effective leader, co-worker, and person. The experience has truly been life changing. I would recommend coaching (and I have) to all my friends. The biggest take-away was that I had all the knowledge within me to make these changes. Frances just helped me to shed light on how to improve upon life habits to become more effective. Going forward, I feel that I have identified how to stop, observe, refill my tank, identify the specific areas that are deficient, brainstorm on ways I can change my behavior to encourage more positive outcomes and then put those behaviors into place. Frances makes you feel you are the only person in the world and she is totally focused on you and what areas you are struggling with. She is always prepared with literature, examples and suggested practices to help.”

“Frances helped me process issues at work. Through my discussions with her I was able to increase my insight greatly because I was able to identify solutions or ways to address the issues myself. Frances was able to help me eliminate a lot of insecurities I had as it pertains to my leadership style and abilities.”
